Glossary

Address bar - The space where you enter web addresses you wish to visit.

Attachment - A file sent along with an e-mail. An attachment may be a picture or a document and has an extension which indicates which type of file it is.

Back - A button which returns you to the previous page.

Bcc: - Means blind carbon copy. A blind carbon copy allows you to send a copy of an e-mail to another person. Blind carbon copies are different from carbon copies because they do not show the receiver that the message was "copied" to someone else. You must separate addresses with a comma when you put more than one address in the bcc line.

Browse - To search for information that you are interested in

Cc: - Means carbon copy. A carbon copy sends a copy of an e-mail to another person. This feature is useful when you want to send an email to several people at once. Another use for carbon copy is when you wish to send yourself a copy of the e-mail. You must separate addresses with a comma when you put more than one address in the cc line.

Click - When you press a mouse button down and release.

Click and Drag - This is when you click and hold the button down on the object you want to move. The object will be highlighted, and once you have moved it to the desired location, release the button to keep it there.


Contact
- information about another person like his/her name, address and birthday which is stored as an entry in your e-mail account.

CPU (Central Processing Unit), Case or Tower - This is the usually large, plastic box which contains the computer. Inside the CPU, you will find the floppy drive, CD ROM drive, and the main components of the computer.

Create Folder
- The button used to create a new folder to save messages.

Delete- The button used to remove unwanted messages

Desktop - The colored background, which is sometimes an enlarged picture.

Double Click - To open a file, folder or to start a program, you should left click twice in quick succession on the appropriate icon.

Drafts
- Uncompleted or unsent e-mail messages.

Dragging – when the mouse also allows you to move a window or icon. This system allows you to move a highlighted icon or piece of text.

E-mail – An electronic form of communication.

Favorites - A catalog of your favorite web addresses

Floppy Disks - Small disks which are used in most computers are known as "Floppies". Each floppy can store a lot information (about 300 pages of writing).

Forward Button (in Internet Explorer) - A button which takes you to the next page you visited in chronological order.

Forward (in e-mail) - The button used to send a message to other people.

Go – A button which begins a search for a web address once it has been entered into the address bar.

Group-A composition of e-mail addresses that you frequently use, such as members of a club.

Hardware - Physical components of your computer system. (i.e., Monitor, printer, etc.)

Homepage
- The first page that opens when you start Internet Explorer.

Icons - Most of the programs and files on your computer are shown as little pictures in the Start Menu, Desktop or windows. These little pictures are called icons.

Inbox - Where new messages are placed upon receipt.

Junk folder- The folder containing any unwanted junk e-mail.

Junk Mail – Unsolicited e-mail from companies or people.

Keyboard - The keyboard is used to type in information and operate the computer.

Left Click - This is when you press the left mouse button down once and release.

Menu - A drop-down list of items that provides options for the window you are working in.

Microphone - A device which provides a way to talk into the computer, or to record with.

Monitor - The TV-type screen on which you view the work you're doing on your computer.

Mouse - The mouse allows you to move, select and click on objects.

Password - A secret code made of words, numbers or both which combines with your username to give you access to your e-mail account.
Pointer - A small arrow representing your mouse position located on your Desktop.

Programs - A collection of functions which you can use to accomplish a particular job.

Printer - A device which makes a printed copy of your work on a
sheet of paper.

Program Shortcut Icon - a “path” to get to the program that the icon represents.

Quickname- A short recognizable name that indicates and person's contact information.

Reply
- The button used to send a message to the sender.

Reply All
- The button used to send out e-mail to everybody that it was sent to in a group, all at the same time this is a great time saver.

Right Click
- This is when you press the right mouse button down once and release.

Scanner – A device like a photocopier that can copy photos and documents to be used by the computer.

Scroll Bar
- The bar on the side or bottom of a window that allows you to move the screen to view more material; typically used so that a user can move around in a large document by allowing you to move up and down or left and right.

Sent messages
- These are the messages that have been sent to others. They are stored for future reference.

Single Click
- See Left Click.

Software - See program.

Speakers - Devices that are connected to the computer so that you can hear music and sound.

Stop
- A button that stops the search for a web address.

Subject:
- In this line, you should write a description of the message. You may leave this line empty but often people do not read e-mails with non-descriptive or missing subject lines. Examples of descriptive subject lines are: Happy Birthday, Thinking of you, Wishing you well.

Taskbar
- The gray bar located at the bottom of the Desktop.

To:
- In this line, you write the e-mail address of the person to whom you are sending a message.

Tool bar
- A group of functions located at the top of the Internet Explorer window used when browsing the Internet.

Trash Can
- The folder containing unwanted or deleted e-mail messages.

Username
- A name which you use to access your e-mail account. It does not have to be your real name.

Window
- Is the rectangular box that will appear on the screen when you double click on an icon or start a program.
