president-elect obama
NC State University’s College of Education will be honoring Former Governor James B. Hunt at its annual Friday Medal Presentation on November 19. An advocate for education reform throughout his career, Hunt will address educational policy for the new national administration.
Hunt served an historic four terms as Governor of North Carolina. Architect of the state's Smart Start early childhood program, Hunt has also been active in education since he left office. He served on the federal Commission on the Future of Higher Education assembled by Margaret Spellings, Bush's education secretary. He is chairman of the board and a founder of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, a California-based think tank. He also serves as board chairman of the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy, a UNC institute with a mission of improving K-12 education nationally.
The Friday Medal honors Hunt for his accomplishments and lifetime dedication to education. The medal is awarded annually to a leader with significant, distinguished and enduring contributions in education who embodies the mission and spirit of the William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.
“Gov. Hunt’s work and commitment has helped to transform education in the state of North Carolina and beyond. His career is exemplary of the ideals that the Friday Medal represents: education, innovation and inspiration,” says Dr. Kathryn M. Moore, Dean of the College of Education.
During the program, Hunt’s career will be highlighted as well as his many contributions to education over the years. During his acceptance, Hunt will speak to the future of education as President-Elect Obama’s administration takes office in January.

Burley Mitchell, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court; Wendell Murphy, former congressman of North Carolina.
The Friday Medal Event takes place during American Education Week that is recognized nationally. The College of Education will have speakers and presentations during the week as part of the celebration. For more information about American Education Week at NC State University Click Here.
The Friday Medal Event is Wednesday, November 19 at 5:30 pm at the Friday Institute located on Centennial Campus at NC State University. The event is invitation only.
