johnston community college
June 24, 2009-- The Board of
Trustees at Johnston
Community College
announced today they
have named Dr.
David Johnson as the
college’s third
president.
Johnson succeeds
retiring president Dr.
Donald L. Reichard,
JCC’s leader for the
past 10 years. The
current provost of the
John H. Daniel
campus at Southside
Virginia Community
College in Keysville, Va., he will assume his new duties on July 1.
“I’m extremely grateful to Lyn Austin and the Board of Trustees for this vote of
confidence,” Johnson, 52, said. “I look forward to working with them, the faculty and
staff, and the community to accomplish the mission at hand -- service to our people.”
The 16th largest community college in North Carolina, JCC witnessed a record
curriculum and continuing education enrollment this year of more than 20,000 students.
Johnson has 15 years of experience at various community colleges in Virginia. He
received a bachelor’s in music education from Campbell University in 1979, a master’s in
divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1984, and a doctorate in education from N.C. State in 1991.
Lyn Austin, chair of the JCC trustees, said Johnson brings exceptional skill and talent to
the position. “The board is so excited to welcome Dr. Johnson,” Austin said. “We look
forward to his leadership and taking our college to the next level.”
Johnson and his wife, Betty Lynne, have two sons, Wallace, a rising junior at Campbell
University, and Isaac, a rising eighth grader.
