All doctoral students must complete the equivalent of the following Master's level coursework. Much of this coursework may have been taken as part of a Master's Degree program.

Any student who completed a non-thesis Master's Degree will need to conduct a research project supervised by the student's advisory chair.

Doctoral Course Requirements - The student's Graduate Advisory Committee designs a program of study for each student using the following guidelines. Individual programs vary depending on the student's prior educational background. (60 credit hours beyond Master's level requirements.)

Mathematical Sciences - 12 Semester Hours
Minimum of 12 semester hours beyond Master's requirements. Doctoral students need 30 hours of mathematical science courses that can count in a graduate program, 9 of which must be taken at N. C. State University.

* Beginning with the semester in which the candidate is admitted to the Ph.D. program. The preliminary examination, taken near the end of the course work, consists of several written exams. Upon successful completion of the written examinations, an oral examination is scheduled, covering the areas specified for the written examination and the proposal for the student's doctoral research. The student's Graduate Advisory Committee and a representative of the Graduate School conduct the oral exam.

** The time limit begins with the first successful completion of the preliminary examinations described above. The student's Graduate Advisory Committee conducts the final dissertation defense.
